ANOTHER SUMMER SEASON OF THE MMBI BIOLOGICAL STATION OPERATION IN DALNIE ZELENTSY HAS STARTED
Scientists of MMBI "opened" the next summer season of experimental and monitoring research in the Murman coastal area at the Institute’s biological station in the village of Dalnie Zelentsy. Traditionally, employees of algology and zoobenthos laboratories are the first to go to a biostation. In 2019, research will continue on state objectives of MMBI “Bottom communities of the Barents Sea, its catchment area and adjacent waters: ecology, biodiversity, the role of alien species” and “Adaptation mechanisms, growth regulation, reproduction and rational use of algae-macrophytes of the Arctic seas”. In the coastal area of the Barents Sea, bentologists will continue to study the ecology of invasive species - Kamchatka crab and snow crab Opilio, which are of interest from the applied and industrial science. It is planned to obtain new information on crab feeding habits to replenish databases and assess the impact of invaders on benthic communities. The laboratory of algology will continue to study the morphology of algae, range and adaptation mechanisms of dominant species of macroalgae at different stages of ontogenesis, as well as experiments to study properties and abilities of macrophyte algae to participate in bioremediation of the environment from various toxicants.
