SPRING JOURNEY OF WHITE-DUSED GOOSE

Professor Natalya Lebedeva, chief researcher at the laboratory of ornithology and parasitology in Murmansk Marine Biological Institute, has been researching migrations of geese labeled with GPS-GSM-transmitters for the past years. In March 2019, a project was initiated to study the migration of white-fronted goose. Breeding area of this species is the Arctic coast. Back in the last century, migration routes of geese wintering in Western Europe were found out by ringing methods by collecting information from hunters. Climate and habitats of geese change, there are changes in characteristics of their migration (dates, directions), choice of wintering sites and migration sites, etc. What are they? Finding out is the goal of the project. Flyways of this species are interesting in that geese from virtually the same grouping fly in different ways to wintering grounds and to the nesting area. One of white-fronted goose stops on spring and autumn migration is the valley of the r. West Manych. It is still not clear where these geese fly to this area and where they fly to breed. What is the migration structure of this group? The female, marked by a transmitter in the area of Veselovsky reservoir, continued spring migration on March 27 to the northeast direction. Not much more than a month, she reached Western Siberia, stopping for a short time during the flight. She overcame in a straight line more than 2000 km, making migratory throws of 200-550 km. A lot of interesting information about biology and ecology of birds has already been obtained, but even more questions arise. Goose continues to fly, and, perhaps, this month will reach the coast of Kara Sea. |
