SCIENTISTS SPOKE ABOUT NEW PROSPECTIVE AREAS OF HARVEST IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN IN ARKHANGELSK, 12-13 APRIL 2019

In mid-April, a conference of scientific experts from countries participating in the Agreement on Prevention of Unregulated Fishing in High Seas of the Central Arctic Ocean was held in Arkhangelsk. The agreement was signed on 03.10.2018 by Russia, the USA, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and the European Union. 12–13, members of Russian and foreign scientific organizations, representatives of the Federal Agency for Fisheries and the Government of Arkhangelsk Region met at the forum. Murmansk Marine Biological Institute was represented by the Deputy Director Dr.Sc. Mikhail Makarov: “An area of open sea in the central part of the Arctic Ocean was mostly covered with ice all year round. In recent years, the ice cover in this area has decreased, which made it possible for fishing. However, ecosystems of the central part of the Arctic Ocean are not sufficiently studied, that is why parties of the Agreement considered on the need to prevent unregulated fishing in this area and introduce additional measures for the long-term conservation and management of bioresources”. The task of one of the Conference round tables, which was attended by a representative of MMBI, was precisely the discussion and development of a joint program of research and monitoring of ecosystems of the central part of the Arctic Ocean and understanding of their functioning, to determine existing or future fish stocks that could be harvested in a sustainable manner, as well as to determine possible effects of such fishing on the Arctic ecosystems.
