SCIENTISTS FROM MMBI RECEIVED NEW DATA ON BIRDS MIGRATION NESTING ON ARCHIPELAGOS OF THE BARENTS SEA

The researcher at a Laboratory of Ornithology and Parasitology at MMBI Alexey Ezhov took part in the expedition of the “Maritime Heritage” Association on the “Open Ocean: Archipelago of the Arctic” and SeaTrack projects. A Russian group of scientists worked on the yacht “Alter Ego” in the archipelagoes of Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya and Gavrilovsky Islands. New data on migration routes and wintering areas of marine colonial birds (thick-billed and thin-billed murre, kittywake, glaucous gull and little auk) were obtained. From June 21 to August 12, 2018 ornithologists carried out surveys of nesting birds in the largest colonies of the islands. During the expedition, scientists visited the former seasonal MMBI biological station in Tikhaya Bay on Hooker Island of the FJL, on which researches of the Russian Arctic National Park work now.
