SCIENTISTS OF MMBI HAVE VISITED NESTING AREAS OF THE BIRD COLONY NEAR BARENSBURG

01.08.2018

The expeditionary group, which conducted geomorphological, hydrobiological and ornithological studies on the archipelago from July 02 to July 25, 2018, returned from the seasonal MMBI biostation in Barentsburg (Spitsbergen). Professor Natalia Lebedeva and her colleagues observed the behavior and numbers of the short-beaked bean goose, burgomaster, kittiwatch, little auks and snowflakes of Western Spitsbergen during the breeding season, mapping nests and colonies. The state of the breeding grounds in the vicinity of Barentsburg and the nesting of birds in the village was studied. New data have been obtained from soil temperature loggers, which will allow continuing a number of long-term measurements in the vicinity of Barentsburg to study the effect of climate fluctuations on the soil invertebrate.
Currently, a group of algologists from MMBI, headed by Professor Grigory Voskoboynikov, is working at the biostation.
