AT THE REGULAR MEETING OF CIVIL DEFENSE AND EMERGENCY SITUATIONS OF RUSSIA, MMBI PRESENTED RESULTS OF ITS INVESTIGATIONS OF ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACTS ON THE BARENTS SEA ECOSYSTEM

27.04.2018

Head of the Laboratory of Oceanography and Radioecology Ph.D. G.V. Ilyin and researcher of the laboratory of engineering ecology А.N. Karnatov participated in the regular 8th scientific and practical conference "Monitoring of natural and technogenic processes - the basis for prevention of emergency situations in Murmansk region", which was held in Murmansk on April 25-26, 2018.
On the conference issues of monitoring radioecological situation on the Kola Peninsula, new technologies for forecasting dangerous phenomena, liquidating oil spills, reducing environmental damage from landfills, preventing emergencies at the Kola Peninsula mines were traditionally discussed. Gennady Ilyin spoke about the radioecological state of marine environment in the coastal part of the Murmansk region and about the impact of the nuclear fleet infrastructure on the example of the radioactive waste storage facility in Andreeva Bay. This object is the most socially significant from the generating radioecological risks point of view. Risks are associated with a historical state of a temporary storage facility, with its modernization and, mainly, at this stage - with an export of radioactive waste by sea from the storage to the railway transport in Kola Bay. The implementation of this technical project is of great scientific and public interest and concern not only for residents of the Murmansk region but for all subjects of the Barents Region. There is a need to obtain reliable information about a radioecological state of the marine environment in dynamics under the influence of man-made and natural factors.
Report of G.V. Ilyin was compiled on the basis of expeditionary scientific research materials carried out by MMBI in 2013-2014 and 2017, the analysis showed that: initial, background, level of radionuclides concentrations in marine environment along the route of radioactive waste evacuation from the storage in Andreeva Bay is currently low; formation of this radioecological background in the western coastal zone of the Murmansk region is still influenced by two weak sources of radionuclides - a drain from the mouth of Zapadnaya Litsa Bay Face and Kola Bay; carried out research received material for solving scientific problems and meeting social needs of the Murmansk region population and European regions of the Barents Cooperation; received materials can be considered both as elements of monitoring the radioecological state of coastal waters and as necessary information for development of maritime activities and integrated coastal zone management.
A.N. Karnatov told how to use both sensitivity and vulnerability of coastal zones in the design of reloading complexes in Kola Bay.
Within the framework of the event, participants of the conference visited radioactive waste management center - the Andreeva Bay branch of the North-Western Center SevRAO, a branch of FSUE RosRAO.
The conference was covered in the media by journalists of the State TV and Radio Company "Murman".
