YOUNG SCIENTISTS LEARN THE NATURE OF THE WORLD OCEAN
19.03.2018
March 14-17, 2018 in Murmansk on the basis of Murmansk Marine Biological Institute, Murmansk State Technical University and Polar Scientific Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography N.M. Knipovich School of Marine Biology "Studies of Arctic ecosystems through the eyes of youth - 2018" was conducted.
The scientific school is a planned event of the REC "Marine Ecosystems", created on the basis of MSTU (biology faculty), MMBI KSC RAS and PINRO, the purpose of which is to unite efforts of higher school, academic and applied science in the training of young cadres in biology for Murmansk region. The school is a traditional event; in 2018 it was held for the eighth time, in an altered format. Tasks of the school included: attracting the attention of schoolchildren, students, graduate students of the region to oceanology and marine biology problems, studying bioresources of the Arctic seas, mastering new modern methods of cognition of surrounding world, as well as supporting a creative scientific potential of future scientists and preparing their final qualification papers. This year the school included several activities: biological dictation for graduate students, undergraduates, bachelors and a master class; lectures and a competition of young scientists, post-graduate students, and undergraduates printed works; creative exhibitions of photographs, watercolor, and artworks; lecture and blitz-contest of schoolchildren in biology. Several scientific-popular lectures on the World Ocean were made. 155 young scientists, students, graduate students, schoolchildren from Murmansk gymnasiums participated as speakers, contestants, and listeners.
On the basis of MMBI, there was an event "Presentation of students work in MMBI". The leading scientist of the Institute, Professor G.M. Voskoboynikov presented a lecture "Biotechnology of hydrobionts". A young scientist of MMBI and a graduate student of MSTU O.V. Bondarev presented a digest of students’ competitive projects brief summaries created on the principle "Describe the scientific value of your work in plain language." Also, reports on topics of the most interesting contest works, which aroused considerable interest among listeners were made. Speakers were asked many questions on the population ecology of marine hydrobionts, methods of statistical calculations, sampling techniques, subtleties of marine mammals, etc. 29 nine scientific papers were submitted for the competition. The winner of the contest for the best scientific work became the master's student E.N. Krol, and post-graduate students Kanishcheva O.V. and Litvinov Yu.V.
